United’s announcement that they’ve selected Panasonic Avionics Corporation is a disappointment. As the leader in the domestic marketplace, with more than 1,200 commercial aircraft installed, Gogo is the here and now, and we believe our current Air to Ground service is superior in many ways to Ku satellite technologies. We’re also confident that our technology roadmap will allow us to incorporate a full suite of technology solutions – including our next generation ATG-4 and Ka satellite-based solutions – that, we believe, will outperform Ku satellite and will allow Gogo to be the only provider able to meet the full-fleet connectivity needs of our airline partners on a cost-effective basis, including regional jets, mainline fleets and international service.

According to a recent study, one in five Gogo users say they’ve switched from their preferred airline to be on a flight equipped with in-flight internet. The study also showed that more than 50 percent of business travelers and 40 percent of leisure travelers who said they switched airlines for in-flight Wi-Fi would not fly without the service for their next trip.

“We’re definitely finding that more and more travelers are booking air travel based on Wi-Fi availability,” said Ash ElDifrawi, Gogo’s chief marketing officer. “This is especially true for business travelers. We frequently hear stories from business travelers who made their travel decision based on the availability of Gogo on their flights - regardless of loyalty or rewards programs.”

Yesterday, we issued our first ever infographic. In this colorful chart, we show statistics of in-air mobile usage. Some surprising numbers come to light; iOS conquers the skies with 78% of users, with Blackberry representing a mere 4%.

In the tablet world, the numbers are not that different - The iPad dominates with 96.8% of users and a dismal 3.2% using Android.

The numbers represent usage in the first half of 2011, which certainly explains the low results from Android.

As the Android platform continues to grow, we certainly expect some major differences when we repeat this survey at the end of the year.

We also look at in-air social network usage - Facebook is (not surprisingly) the number social network visited on mobile devices, followed by Twitter, LinkedIn and Foursquare.

The popularity of Foursquare is in part thanks to the Gogo Mile High badge.

One final statistic worth pointing out -- tablet and laptop usage. Even though tablets are slowly pushing laptops out of the market, we still hear from our customers that a tablet alone is not enough to take on the road. 79% of tablet owners still travel with their laptop.

Last month, we wrote about an update to the Hipmunk flight search site which added Gogo equipped plane searches. At the time, the new feature was limited to their site, but they promised to add it to their iOS app as soon as possible.

Today, they delivered on that promise with an updated version of their app. Inside the new Hipmunk app, you can search for flights, and instantly see whether it has Gogo available. As availability of our service becomes a deciding factor in booking a flight, having instant access to this information is a fantastic update.

You'll find the new Hipmunk app in the iTunes store.
